Preview

The Dolphins’ playoff odds are slim. The easiest scenario is the New England Patriots losing out and the Dolphins winning consecutive games to finish the season. Miami’s 5-1 record in-division would vault them ahead of New England (4-2 if the Patriots lose to the New York Jets in Week 17).

To get there, the Dolphins have to beat the Jaguars first. Head coach Adam Gase gets that.

“It’s a small percentage, but you keep fighting because this is a weird league and you never know what’s happening.”

The Jaguars continue to reel. Last week, Leonard Fournette seemed to injure himself again, this time his foot. Fournette only carried the ball once in the Jaguars’ Week 15 loss to the Washington Redakins.

Eagles vs Ravens

Though Carson Wentz won’t be playing in Week 3, we should still get a nice preview of these two teams when they clash on Thursday in Philadelphia. Both the Eagles and the Ravens plan on contending this year, and this will be our first chance to see what these teams might look like during the regular season.

Free Sign Up To watch Live Stream

After getting bounced from the playoffs early last year, both squads hope that better luck with health, more experience, and key signings will lead them further into the postseason in 2019.

The Ravens signed former Saints running back Mark Ingram with the hope that he will provide a key rushing threat. Quarterback Lamar Jackson is already very mobile, and a back like Ingram could make Jackson more dangerous while adding an elite running threat to the team.

Philadelphia had a high-profile offensive veteran signing of their own in DeSean Jackson. It’s unclear how much the elite receiver has left in the tank, and just how much he will draw coverage away number one offensive threat Alshon Jeffrey. A key matchup to watch will involve Ravens corner Marlon Humphries, who should offer a nice barometer of how these pass catchers match up against elite secondary talent.

In short, Thursday will offer the first chance to see if key additions to each squad will help these teams get over the hump.

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Baltimore Ravens

The Eagles vs. Ravens game continues the NFL Network’s run of nationally televising the first week of the preseason, but even if you’ve cut the cable cord or you want to watch it on your mobile device, there are plenty of ways to accomplish that. But first, you’ll need to get acquainted with NFL Network.

What is NFL Network?

If you want to be immersed in pro football, NFL Network is the place to go. There’s plenty to love about NFL Network, including the ability to watch exclusive shows like Good Morning FootballNFL Total Access, A Football LifeInside the NFL, and most importantly, Sunday’s NFL GameDay once the regular season begins.

There’s also daily programming devoted to power rankings and fantasy football that football lovers will geek out over. NFL Network shows most Thursday night games during the regular season, and it’ll exclusively show some of the international games in 2019. Take note, though: NFL Network can no longer be seen via DirecTV Now.

If you want to watch the Eagles vs. Ravens online via Sling TV, you’ll need to be subscribed to either Sling Blue ($25 per month) or Sling Orange + Blue ($40 per month). Both of those packages include NFL Network and a number of sports channels—like three ESPN channels, NBCSN, and FS1—and it’s still a nice perk that Sling subscribers can order a la carte packages. Sling TV also offers a special Latino package for bilingual viewers.

Sling TV is currently offering a deal where you can subscribe for 40% off the regular price for the first month of your subscription. That means Sling Blue would cost $15, and Sling Orange + Blue would cost $25. (Here’s a complete guide to Sling TV channels and our Sling TV review.)

If you’d like to watch live NFL games directly from your PS4, PlayStation Vue is your best bet. PlayStation also works with streaming devices like Roku and Amazon Fire products, but what separates PlayStation from the rest of the streaming services is that it’s also compatible with Kodi. No matter how you stream, you’ll get to choose from four tiers of channels—all but the cheapest include NFL Network.

From there, you can also add NFL RedZone as part of the $10-per-month Sports Pack, which also unlocks ESPN Bases Loaded, ESPN Classic, Longhorn Network, Outside TV, and NBCUniversal regional sports networks. You can see the full list of PlayStation Vue channels here. Two other great perks: You can stream on up to five devices at once, and there’s also unlimited cloud DVR.

Other ways to watch NFL Network online

If you subscribe to NFL Network through a cable provider—or you know someone who does and they owe you a relatively large favor—you can also watch via the official NFL app. All you have to do is download it from your streaming device of choice—Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, PS4, Roku, or Android TV—and then enter in your cable credentials when prompted. You can also stream on any iOS or Android device, or on your desktop. Just visit nfl.com/watch.

Eagles vs. Ravens: Why it matters

While both of these teams showed potential last year, potential doesn’t win championships.

The Eagles and the Ravens are going to have to improve their supporting cast if their signal-callers are going to lead them to the promised land. Carson Wentz has been great when he’s been able to stay on the field. The quarterback missed five games last season and famously was out for the postseason during the team’s 2017 Super Bowl run.

Jackson was an interesting player for the Ravens last year, but he failed to place himself firmly in the elite category of young quarterbacks alongside Patrick Mahomes. One number he will have to improve upon this year is his 58% completion percentage.

These quarterbacks are going to need help from their supporting casts if they are going to take their teams to the next level. Will Ravens center Matt Skura be able to hold his own against punishing Eagles defender Fletcher Cox? Will big, physical third-round receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside make a difference for an Eagles team looking to upgrade their weapons?

For two teams hoping to push past the real of “just good enough,” every potential roster upgrade matters. Whether it’s more productive offensive weapons or a stronger line, these squads are going to try to give their star quarterbacks every advantage they can heading into the season.

Panthers vs Patriots Preview

The Patriots improved to 2-0 in the preseason with a 22-17 road victory over the Tennessee Titans on Saturday.

Tom Brady sat again, leaving the snaps to veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer and rookie Jarrett Stidham, a fourth-round pick in April.

“It was good to see our guys compete out there today,” head coach Bill Belichick said, according to Patriots.com. “I thought we really gave a solid 60-minute effort in all three phases of the game. Obviously, the Titans are a good team, and they’re tough, physical team. It was a good challenge for us — a good matchup for us. It was a great week. We can learn from the week, learn from the game, just try to keep getting better here and grind it out until next week.”

Pats rookie running back Damien Harris, who missed the preseason opener with a wrist/hand injury, rushed 14 times for 80 yards. The third-round pick caught all four of his targets for another 23 yards.

“He’s done a good job. Obviously, he is still learning,” quarterback Brian Hoyer said, per Patriots.com. “At any position in this offense it takes a lot of hard work, it takes a lot of studying, it takes a lot of putting the time in. I think all of those guys – you could name all of those rookies – have done a good job of putting the time in and really asking good questions. He has great guys to learn from ahead of him and all of those guys. They are all coming along, and they are all putting in the work. It’s all about getting better and grinding through it and getting better one day at a time.”

The Panthers’ preseason mark fell to 1-1 on Friday as they lost 27-14 to the Buffalo Bills. Buffalo starting quarterback Josh Allen and his backup Matt Barkley tore up the Carolina defense, going 17-of-21 for 212 yards and a touchdown before undrafted free agent Tyree Jackson came in and struggled.

Carolina, who ranked 27th in sacks a season ago, recorded just one QB takedown on Friday. Over the offseason, they signed six-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Gerald McCoy to a one-year contract.

“Part of it being preseason is finding out where we look great and where we look terrible,”McCoy said after the loss, according to Panthers.com. “I’ve been a part of preseasons where we look like we’re unstoppable. Then we get to the regular season and we’re like, ‘What happened?’

“It’s preseason. You get a good gauge of where you’re at. Really, it’s a glorified practice. You want to come out and play well but you don’t panic. It’s early. It doesn’t count until the Rams come here.”

Obviously, we have a new quarterback, whoever it is, it’s going to be a new quarterback and that’s going to be a key element.

The The offensive line we have to get shored up a little bit. Defensively, I feel very confident in what coach [defensive coordinator Greg] Manusky and the players are doing right now. Giants vs Bengals Preview

While all signs point to Eli Manning starting the season under center, rookie first-round draft pick Daniel Jones has forced himself into serious consideration for the starting job. Despite showing some troubles hanging onto the football in his week two outing, Jones rebounded nicely and finished 11-14 for 161 yards and a touchdown. Manning and Jones should both see some extended playing time against the Bengals and the QB controversy talk could further heat up with another solid showing from Jones.

The depth pieces in the Giants’ run game look to be much improved behind a shored-up offensive line. Should the solid line play from the Giants translate over to the regular season, don’t be surprised to see Saquon Barkley put together an even more impressive showing than his rookie campaign. With a number of talented pieces including Paul Perkins and Wayne Gallman waiting in the wings, the Giants have a chance to put together one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL. Barkley should still serve as the versatile bell-cow back but having serviceable “change of pace” backs in the wings will help to keep Barkley fresh while keeping the defense from seeing the same looks too many times.

For the Bengals, one of their biggest question marks coming in is coincidentally their offensive line. While Dalton has managed to stay upright for all but one snap so far in the preseason, the Bengals aren’t giving him much time to operate while racking up their fair share of penalties. With what should be an extended run against the Giants for the first-team unit, this should give a better look as to if the early struggles are simply preseason rust or indicative of a season-long weak point. Especially with a run game lacking any elite talent, the Bengals need solid line play to help take some of the pressure off Dalton and the passing attack.

The Bengals don’t necessarily have a brewing QB controversy just yet but if Ryan Finley keeps up his strong play, Andy Dalton just might find himself on the hot seat. Finley went an extremely respectable 20-26 for 150 yards and two touchdowns to build on a strong showing in week one of the preseason. The rookie quarterback out of North Carolina State has played far beyond his years so far and has seemingly entrenched himself as the Bengal’s second string option. If Dalton finds himself struggling mightily to start the year, don’t be surprised to hear Bengals fans calling to give Finley a shot
